John 5:31-47

John 5:31-47
Worthy Witnesses
Sometimes in a courtroom an expert witness will be brought in. They have specialized knowledge and are considered to be authorities in their particular field. Their testimonies often times are very critical to the outcome of a case. Expert witnesses are authoritative. Their testimonies should be heeded and given serious weight.

Jesus has expert witnesses. Jesus has told his audience who He is – that He is the Son of God who is equal with God and is God. In John 1:5 it says that “the light shines in the darkness, but, the darkness has not understood it.” Jesus was shining His light on the Jews and they were not getting it. So, He points them to the expert witnesses He had to corroborate His testimony.

In our passage this morning Jesus lists four Expert Witnesses: His Forerunner, His Fantastic Works, His Father, and the Flawless Scriptures.

The Forerunner of Jesus (v. 33-35)
The first expert witness is the Forerunner of Jesus, John the Baptist. In verses 33-35 Jesus says, “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it htat you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.”

John the Baptist is introduced in chapter 1. He is the last OT prophet sent by God to the nation of Israel. His came because God sent Him. He testified because God told Him what to speak. He was not the Christ; he was sent in front of the Christ. His job was to make the nation of Israel ready to receive their Messiah. He was the first prophet that Israel had seen in 400 years, which is why they rejoiced for a while in him (v. 35). Chapter 1 verse 7, “He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.”

John’s total life was totally dedicated to witnessing for Christ. There was nothing in his life that was not pointing towards Jesus. His light was always shining before men. He never failed to testify for Christ in front of men. You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. The Jews sent a delegation to John in chapter 1 and they were interrogating him to find out who he was. He told them he is a voice crying out in the wilderness. Crying out to all those lost in the wilderness that they may find Christ because He was coming.

His testimony is called a light. He was a lamp that burned and gave light for a time. The Greek word for “lamp” there in verse 35 is “luchnos”, which means a small, portable lamp. When Jesus is called the light the Greek word is “Phos” which means the essence of Light. John is a little light, but, Jesus is the Light. (People on the beach with lanterns illustration. You don’t see people flocking to the beach laying around in bathing suits and playing in the water in the dark with lanterns. John is a lantern. Jesus is like the sun, the ultimate source of light.)

John was worthy witness because Jesus affirms His ministry in this verse. But, Jesus doesn’t need John’s witness. Jesus is the Son of God whether John the Baptist says so or not. People today have the notion that just because they don’t believe in something then that something is false. Or, if they do believe in something that something is true. “What’s true for you isn’t necessarily true for me.” Listen, here is a universal truth: Jesus is the Son of God who will either be someone’s Judge or their Savior. That’s true for everyone.

Now, if Jesus doesn’t need John’s testimony, why does He mention it? Because many Jews revered John as a prophet from God. They listened to John. Jesus is saying that this great man – whose ministry you enjoyed for a while – was pointing to ME! Listen to John and believe in me.
Need illustration. It’s like a reference. …………………

And, believing in Jesus is the whole point. That’s why Jesus came, so that they would believe in Him. But, John is only a man - the greatest man who ever was born of a woman, but, only a man none the less. There are greater expert witnesses than John.

The Feats of Jesus (v. 36)
The second expert witness is the Miraculous feats (or works) of Jesus. Notice verse 36“I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.”

The works of Jesus were more compelling than the witness of John the Baptist. John never did any signs. His preaching was bold and often times scathing, but John never did one miracle in front of the Jews. Jesus did so many that according to this Gospel writer that if all of what Jesus did were written down the whole world couldn’t contain all the books. Jesus did what John didn’t and couldn’t do because He was John wasn’t and couldn’t be: equal with God the Father.

The miraculous works of Jesus were to confirm to the Jews that God sent Him and was with Him (Jn. 3:2; Acts 2:22) and to convince them who He was (John 14:10, 11). The miracles weren’t to put on a show. They weren’t for gaining a sensational awe where people were impressed.

If you were a Jew witnessing these mighty works that Jesus did you were to come to the conclusion that God was with this Jesus of Nazareth and therefore listen to and obey what He had to say. Isn’t that what the Father said at Jesus’ baptism? “This is my Son whom I love. Listen to Him!”

Jews seek signs Paul said. Nicodemus and the other Jewish leaders were convinced God was with Jesus because of the signs He was doing. They only went halfway though: they believed God was with Him but they didn’t believe His message and obey it. This shows the stubborn and hardened heart they had - they knew Jesus was from God but they didn’t listen to Him – in other words they wouldn’t listen to God.

“I didn’t see these miracles myself. If God would perform a miracle for me I would believe.” No you wouldn’t. The vast majority of those who saw Jesus’ signs did not believe in Him. Miracles only convinced people that God was with Jesus. Believing in Jesus comes from being convinced by His message that you are a sinner who needs His salvation.

Besides, you don’t need to see the signs for yourself because you have an eyewitness telling you right now what he saw and heard for himself concerning Jesus: John the Apostle. You have his testimony that he wrote down in this Gospel telling you what he saw.

If Jesus did so many other miracles and signs that aren’t recorded in this Gospel, then, when John was inspired by God to write this Gospel you can bet that of all that Jesus did, God saw it fit that these we have here, that John wrote down are perfectly sufficient for you to read and be convinced yourself as to who Jesus is.

That’s why John wrote, “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that YOU may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing YOU may have eternal life in his name.” You don’t need to see the miracles because you have the reliable eyewitness of someone else who did.

Here’s the thing: It’s not John the Apostle’s eternal destiny that hangs in the balance here. He wrote this so that YOU could have eternal life by believing. John was saved. He wrote this down so you could be saved too. Your eternal destiny – whether you go to heaven or hell – is determined by whether you believe this testimony or reject it. Do you believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? Do you believe He died for your sins? Do you believe God sent Him? If you do then my friend YOU can have eternal life in Jesus’ name.

The Father of Jesus (v. 32, 37-38)
So we’ve seen 2 expert witnesses so far, the Forerunner John the Baptist, the Feats of Jesus (His miraculous works), and now we see a 3rd, the Father of Jesus. Verses 32, 37 and 38 say, “There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid… And the Father who sent me Himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.”

This is not the word of God on the pages of Scripture. This is the internal witness that every Christian has inside of them from God. This is a witness that God the Father gives in the hearts of those who believe. Notice what Jesus says, “You have never heard his voice nor seen his form nor does his word dwell in you for you do not believe in ME, the one He sent.”

Certainly Jesus is implying that He has seen and heard God – which He says over and over again in this Gospel. But, what He’s talking about here is the witness that God gives to our hearts – He speaks to our hearts and confirms that which we believe about Jesus Christ His Son.

Look at 1 John 5:9-10, …. What is being talked about? God’s testimony about His own Son, Jesus Christ. Where does God give this testimony? In our hearts. When can we have this testimony? When we believe in Jesus Christ. Romans 8:16, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” God confirming to our own hearts and to our own spirits that we are His children because of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Here were these Jews who had the Law and the writings of the prophets and they were as religious and zealous as any people on earth but Jesus says, “You do not know God.” They were utterly ignorant of God. That must have absolutely infuriated them.

We have more bibles available today in easy to read versions, more Christian colleges, more Christian literature, more Christian this and that available to us and yet there is a great, great ignorance of God in this country – by Christians. There are so many running around today saying “well we can’t really know for sure who God is or what He is like”. And they are so-called pastors! Ignorance of the knowledge of God is devastating. Iin Hosea 4:6 God says, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge”. He’s talking about knowledge of Him that comes by faith in and obedience to Him.

The Father gives expert testimony to Jesus Christ
The Flawless Scriptures (v. 39-47)
And lastly, in verses 39-47, Jesus points the Jews to their own Scriptures for His final expert witness. There are three things to see from these verses.

First of all, study of the Word of God should always POINT you to God. Verses 39 and 40 say, “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

Life is not in the pages of Scripture themselves – they point to the One who is and can give life. Jesus said in verse 21 that as the Son He gives life. Jesus rebukes their bankrupt religion. They studied the Scriptures and they thought that they were right with God for it. Chapter 7 verse 49 records their attitude, “this mob that knows nothing of the Law – there is a curse on them.”

Simply having Bible knowledge does not achieve salvation. I hear people say, “Well I’ve read the Bible x amount of times”. So what? They say that to say “Well I know what the Bible says because I’ve read it and I don’t need to hear it from you or go to church to hear it.” But reading the Bible doesn’t save you. It points you to the One Person who can save you. The Bible is an expert witness because from beginning to end it testifies about one person: Jesus Christ.

The Jews thought they were going to heaven simply because God had chosen them, and given them the Law, the Prophets, the Oracles and all the Scriptures. They were wrong. Those things pointed to the One they were to trust in for salvation but they never saw that.

The second point Jesus makes about the Scriptures is that studying them causes us to PURSUE a life that pleases God. Notice verses 41-44, “I do not accept praises from men, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in my Father’s name and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe if you accept praises from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?”

Pride is always the obstacle that keeps men from coming to Christ. They were arrogant because they were puffed up with Bible knowledge. Paul said that knowledge puffs up. They loved to impress each other and be glorified by one another. They’re religious showman. It’s all a show because Jesus says their white-washed tombs. They’ve got the appearance of righteousness but they are actually sons of hell.

Don’t we see that today? Don’t be a showman. Jesus is speaking to showman today too when He says, “I know you, I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.” The reason is that you have the love of praise from men instead. It’s pride. And that will always keep a man from accepting Christ.

Thirdly, we see that Jesus says Moses will be their Prosecutor because of their unbelief. Look at verses 45-47, “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”

They loved Moses. Moses was their hero. Moses was the author of the Law they revered. Moses was their spiritual father. They thought that because of Moses they were right with God. They set their hopes on Moses. But, Jesus said Moses is not going to be their advocate on the day of Judgment. Instead he is going to be their accuser. It doesn’t say here but they must have been irate when Jesus said this. He just ripped their entire system of hope right out from under them.

Why? Because they really didn’t trust the message Moses wrote. Notice here that Jesus is affirming the writings of Moses in the OT as God-given Scripture. And notice that the writings of the OT are consistent with everything about Jesus in the NT. All that Moses and the OT wrote about is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. It goes back to what Jesus said in verse 39, “these are the Scriptures that testify about me.” And because the Jews didn’t believe Moses, they can’t believe in Jesus because Moses wrote about Jesus. Therefore, Moses and the Law which he wrote down will be the measure by which they are judged before God. That is terrifying.

It is terrifying because it means they will be judged for their deeds according to the Law. But the Bible says in Romans 3:20, “No one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” We cannot be righteous in God’s sight by following the Law either. We cannot do anything to earn salvation. Being righteous in God’s sight does not come by adding up all the good things we’ve done in this life. Our righteousness is as filthy rags to God.
But, the righteousness that God will accept is the righteousness of His Son, Jesus Christ. That is perfect righteousness. That is the acceptable standard of righteousness. Here’s the problem, Jesus was sinless and holy, but, we are sinful and unholy. We are unrighteous and without hope on our own. How, could we possibly, in God’s sight, have the same righteousness as Jesus Christ?
Jesus will give you His righteousness when you put your trust in Him for the forgiveness of you sins. He is the Holy One who came to die for your sins. The Holy for the unholy. The righteous for the unrighteous. The sinless One for the sinful one. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made Him, who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God.” That is how you can have the perfect righteousness of Christ in God’s sight. Believe in His Son. Trust in Him.
